List of gigs/known tapes - 12.19.04, 03:37 PM

Is there a link to all the gigs Van Halen did, and/or a list of known tapes circulating? I'm just curious if any of the shows I was at got recorded (Mar 10, 1978 opening for Journey at Masonic Aud. in Detroit, and Cobo Arena Sept 14, 1978 when they blew Sabbath off the stage). Apologies if this has been asked before.

Coz -

Those 1978 shows don't circulate. But the Roth-era tours after the 78 tour all had at least one Detroit show recorded:

5-1-79 Masonic Auditorium, Detroit
4-27-80 Cobo Hall, Detroit (unlistenable tape, but the show was recorded!)
7-4-81 Cobo Hall, Detroit 80m (middle of 3 shows; fireworks galore and a great performance)
8-13-82 Cobo Hall, Detroit 115m
8-14-82 Cobo Hall, Detroit 115m
4-5-84 Cobo Hall, Detroit 110m
4-6-84 Cobo Hall, Detroit 110m

You are a lucky man to have seen them twice in 1978!

I'd sure like to get my hands on that '79 Masonic show. Thanks for answering my question. I can just google to find out if there is a VH gig list.

Coz,

I tried to google up the dates that used to be up at VH's official website (but were taken down once Hagar rejoined) but couldn't pull them up. Could you please post a link if you are successful?

The 79 show is pretty common. You'll be able to find it.

Thanks,

ffoner

Yeah thanks ron, it's nice to have that available again...even though a fair amount of dates are wrong on there too

The most prime example is how they have VH playing Boston on 6/13/79 and then Brussels, Belgium on 6/14/79...I don't quite think that happened.

Honestly, when you think of all the shows that VH did, there aren't that many bootlegs. For example, with The Police, it seems like every single show they ever did has a bootleg for it, especially after August of '81. There are a TON of Police bootlegs relative to their life span.

Look at '79 and '80...too few

You're right Lou... it's really quite painful to think about the amount of shows that VH played and see how much we're actually missing out on. U2 seems to be pretty plentiful as well. I've talked to several U2 traders who have nearly entire tours... man... I'd love to put a whole VH tour together. Could you imagine if we had the 1981 tour from start to finish? oooh... ahhh...

Yup, same goes for R.E.M., pretty much every show was recorded.

What particularly sucks about '80 is that the few shows we do have by and large suck. The London '80s are the only ones you can really say sound great.

You know, I've wondered about Toronto 07/18/80 - titled "Have You Seen Junior's Grades?".

The only reference to quality that VHboots makes is "A very clean audience recording"... and it also mentions a bit of an echo from the coliseum's size. Depending on how bad the echo is, I figured this would be a pretty good boot, but I haven't heard it yet. Just saw it in your list... how does it stack up?

It's probably in the better 50% of 1980 recordings. It's about a B/B- level I'd suppose...decent. There's a fair amount of audience noise too. Unless by clean they mean low generation.

Generation is a possibility I didn't think of when I read "clean"... That's a shame, cuz I really had high hopes for that one after reading the page. I suppose in the upper half isn't too bad though.

The thing that's really disheartening is knowing that there have got to be plenty of recordings out there that just aren't making it into circulation. So many times, I hear of someone getting an old boot from someone else who just had it laying around for years. They probably didn't even listen to it much, if at all. How many recordings are laying in boxes in a basement or attic growing mold and mildew on the tape. Even a properly stored tape will begin to enter the first stages of decay after only 15-20 years... by 25, the process is well under way, most of the time. There's a really limited timeframe to get these shows into circulation before we all miss out.

I have been trying to get a Detroit show from each tour, so far I have one from 79, 81, 84, 86, 88, 92, 95, 98, 04, so I need 78,80,82, and 93
