Posting requirements will now be strictly enforced--NEW RULE 5/20/05 - 04.19.05, 08:58 AM

OK guys. I've seen way too many torrents that have so little information you have no idea what you are getting. Starting today, we're going to be enforcing posting requirements, which you can find in the FAQ section. Here is a recap of what every new torrent must have in the text file, and in the initial post:

1. The band, the PRECISE date (or just admit if you don't know it, or try to find it out before posting), the location, and the venue. An unacceptable posting is this:

Van Halen
Phoenix '81

That gives us very little.

2. Source. Audience, Soundboard, FM, TV, etc.

3. Lineage. This means what steps did the audio go through before it finally got to FLAC or SHN. We need to see something like this at bare minimum:

AUD>unknown gen cass>CDR(2)>EAC>WAV>FLAC

Note that we will now be requiring generations of CDR's. If you don't know how far down the chain of copying your CDR is, put CDR(x).

Obviously, if you have even more information, like what kind of recorder was used, and the equipment that was used to get the files to where they are now, that'd be greatly appreciated. I'm not saying that something that you have little information on is disallowed, but if you don't have much info, think hard before torrenting it...look at other people's lists, see if anyone has that show with a known lineage.

Also, if you have a bootleg that was pressed to silver, you have to admit if you have a CDR copy. We won't disallow CDR copies of boots to be seeded because I know they're hard to get, however if you want to seed a CDR copy of a boot you have to give it a hard listen to make sure there are no digital errors introduced.

Updated 5/20/05: If you're re-seeding something, please seed the original set of FLAC files only. Please do not take FLAC files, burn to audio CDR, and then re-rip and re-FLAC. This is for the good and purity of the trading rule. In other words, this is not allowed: CDR>EAC>WAV>FLAC>WAV>CDR>WAV>FLAC

4. Setlist. I can't believe how I'm seeing people post no setlists. If I don't see a setlist, the torrent is pulled.

5. FLAC Fingerprints for FLAC files, MD5 checksums for SHN files. This is the key and something that will be strictly enforced.

Each torrent should have FLAC Fingerprints, which are internal checksums for FLAC files. FLAC Fingerprints are created by using FLAC Frontend, and then loading the files and hitting the "Fingerprint" button on the right hand side. It will ask you to make a name for the text file it creates and then save it. After that, it will make a text file using DOS and you'll have the Fingerprints. You can get FLAC Frontend here: http://mikewren.com/flac/

If you're using SHN files, you need to get checksums for the files. You can do this by downloading MD5 Summer which is an easy program to use and should be self explanatory. Get that here: www.md5summer.org

From now on, any torrent that does not have FLAC Fingerprints for FLAC or MD5 checksums for SHN's, in the text file and on the initial post, will be pulled. These checksums are the only empirical way we can be sure, and people trading can be sure, they have a perfect copy of the original seed.

__________________________________

Now that's the procedural requirements. The substantive requirements are basically the following:

No mp3 or lossy sourcing unless you know and can verify for a fact, the show was recorded with a lossy device like a MD recorder, or someone is hoarding the show and it was let out only in .mp3. I think the first Nirvana recording in 1987 is known to only be in .mp3. The demo "Glitter" by Van Halen was released on a website and is only available as lossy audio. Van Halen London 6/1/78 SB was previously uncirculated, and let out via a mini-disc transfer. Other than an exceptional situation like that, lossy audio is unacceptable. Also note that audio ripped from a DVD is unacceptable as it's lossy.

Absolutely no digital errors meaning clicks between tracks, 2 second gaps between tracks, microgaps between tracks, clicks elsewhere on the track, pops, skipping or anything of that sort, unless you know and can verify for a fact the ONLY copy of the show is one that has a problem like this. A very RARE example, and the only one I can think of off the top of my head, is Van Halen Baton Rouge 11/26/82, where the taper is hoarding the show and the only copies available are a partial show with cut off tracks.

If there are digital errors to be found, the torrent will be pulled. Before seeding, you must check track transitions. You must give it a hard listen. If you can't do that, then please don't torrent it. Quality over quantity. It does the community no good to put out something that has digital errors. It's not about having the chance to hear the show no matter what. It's about having a chance to hear the show as close to the original recording quality as possible.

Finally, no partial shows unless you can verify, with 100% certainty, that that's how the master copy is. An example of this is garbage such as Van Halen: Complete Two Nights, the London 6/29/79 portion. Not only does that have digital errors, but it's incomplete. Another example is that crap VH "Everybody Wants A Virgin," which is for whatever reason a partial show. I saw something on vhboots.com also called "Little Rock '79" or something that's only 71 minutes. That's garbage. The complete show is 80 minutes and there are plenty of tape copies that have the complete show.

MD5 sums look similar. Again, if this is not in the initial post of the torrent, it gets pulled. This is the only way to verify we are all getting the exact copies of the original.

Yeah actually, could someone tell me how to do an empirical sector boundary error check? I can't seem to find overt instructions on how to do that. I'd like to start putting that into my posts.

grabbed from TTD http://www.etree.org/shnutils/shntool/ The initial install is a little tricky. Once you get it there I'll give you the batch files to do SBE check, SBE fix and a few other nifty routines (thanks to Umclem at TTD). Once you learn how to use it, a very powerful utility.

How do you do a bunch of files all at once? I've figured out only how to do one at a time.

To create the batch files open note pad paste each of the following commands into a separate file. When you save it change the .txt to .bat and the file type will change to {all files} save it on your desktop. To activate the batch files paste the folder you want to process into the batch file. The SBE and strip batches will rewrite the problem files within the original source folder and apent the name fixed at the end of the original file. Delete the original file and you should be good to go. Hope this makes sense.

Here are the batch files
This is for shnlen

@echo off
%~d1 & cd %*
for %%T in (shn flac wav ape) do if exist *.%%T shntool len -u mb *.%%T
pause

This is for fixing SBE's
@echo off
%~d1 & cd %*
for %%T in (shn flac wav ape) do if exist *.%%T shntool fix *.%%T
pause

This is to strip extra RIFF chunks
@echo off
%~d1 & cd %*
for %%T in (shn flac wav ape) do if exist *.%%T shntool strip *.%%T
pause

This is to output a text file
@echo off
%~d1 & cd %*
for %%T in (shn flac wav ape) do if exist *.%%T shntool len -u mb *.%%T >> "%~n1-shntool.txt"

RIFF chunks is extra bits in the file headers. They could be put there by editing programs or ID's essentially it's anything beyond the 44 bytes that the file headers should have. It usually will not cause a problem in a normal playback. But if you encounter them, it's a good idea to remove them, especially since it's so easy to do.

Looks Good Lou! Looks Like I Have A Little Studying To Do. I Need To Try Those Fingerprints Because I Have Not Included Them In My Torrents. This New Set Of Rules Might Scare Off A Few Would Be Seeders But It's Been Getting Out Of Control. You See A New Post And You Open The Thread & All You See Is A Link To The Torrent. No Info Posted & No Info Included In The Torrent. Are We Supposed To Magically Know What We Are Going To Get If We Download It. Well I Guess This Is One Big Step To Keeping This Site Free Of Garbage.

Off To Study,
Onfire

The requirments might scare a few people off from seeding at first, but in the end it will be worth it.

There's nothing to be afraid of. Most people are using FLACfrontend. All you have to do is paste the FLAC files back into the program and press the fingerprint button. Isn't there a seeding tutorial somewhere here?
