Exclamation Dear Unconnectable Peers - IMPORTANT INFORMATION! - 09.13.06, 01:46 PM

Howdy.

I hope you are taking the time to read this little blurb. We have an awesome sharing community here, but there are still those who don't contribute very much. In some cases, it is because people don't realize that they aren't giving back. They don't realize that the outside world cannot connect to the necessary network ports on their computer.

All too frequently a torrent will be listed as having 3 or more seeders sharing it, and when someone actually tries to connect, there is no data being transferred and it leaves the peer frustrated. As harsh as it may sound, you are absolutely useless to the rest of the community if you are not connectable. If you use a router which is not configured properly, no one can connect to you and that is a very large negative within the music sharing community. Remember the keyword is "sharing". I've no patience nor respect for those who simply want to grab what they can and then disallow others to connect to them. If you are one of those, then this short tutorial is not for you; a smuck up the side of the head is what you need ..now drop and give me 50, private! (Flayed attempt at humour).

If you don't know how to do some of these things that I'm about to mention, please LEARN! It isn't rocket science and the following links will make it fairly easy to learn.

If you use a network router, whatever computer (if you have more than one) that you are using to download torrents should be configured to use a static IP address. Please bare in mind that assigning a static IP on an internal LAN has nothing to do with your ISP provided 'public' IP address. what's more, it's actually quite easy to configure. More Information is available here:
http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm

You then need to configure your router so that it will literally "forward" the network traffic of a given port or ports (6881 is the default) to the computer you are using a bittorrent client on. More information is available here:
http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm

Dear Mods,

I realize that this is not the proper location for this type of information, but I didn't know where else to place this post so that it would get high profile attention.

WOW! You guys made this thread a "sticky"; I'm honored. Thank-you.

Great topic, but as hard as we may try, there is no getting through to some people. Some just don't care and it sucks for everyone else. Hopefully the share ratio will motivate them a little.

A few people have the portforward site in their sigs. The more info the better. Thanks

also, if you're computer is firewalled, others are unable to connect to you, which ultimatly, slows down the download time for others. So do what I do...disable your firewall, then let the torrent run. When it's done, put the firewall back up!
Just a suggestion

You know, no matter what I do I can't get my lights green. I do not have a static IP, and I'm not going to get one...long story involves me not really being in control of my internet service and being in a very small town I have few options...And in those magic times long ago when I did have green lights, there was no difference at all in performance. I have very little problems sharing, but I always show up as firewalled.

So, is there any way to get those lights green without a static IP? Or am I just going to be annoying from now on?

Absolutely yes. What the OP meant was that if you are behind a router, you need to configure it to give your computer the same IP (static IP) on your internal network so that the port forwarding will work correctly. To the outside world, it doesn't matter if your IP address changes.

Yes you definitely should be setting your computer up with a static IP address, it's essential for port forwarding to work right.

DokkenDude helped me with my portforward stuff when I got Vonage phone service. That did a number on my router. Bobs23 & Sibly are also pretty good with that stuff.

By the looks of 2fools share ratio he seems to be connecting pretty good...... When he uploads a torrent I usually get pretty good speed from him.

Arrow Benefits of Becoming a Member - 05.26.08, 10:14 PM

Can you simply tell if Runescape is a great game maplestory powerleveling or not without you becoming a member? The answer to that would be, NO! Well you can make a few predictions about Runescape and see the moral of the game when being a regular user and not a member but becoming a member brings a whole lot of additions to Runescape that you would never see if you were not a member. Being a member of Runescape has so many benefits and I will try to list them all here for you. Runescape tells you them, but I'm going to detail it a few features for you here. runescape money
