Guitard: The original camera audio had patches where the mic wasn't functioning properly. Fortunately, CBG had an alternate recording. Unfortunately, the tape flip for that alternate recording occurred during a spot where there wasn't any video. I used 25 seconds of audio from another recording to replace that part. So you will notice a difference in the way the audio sounds at the 37:30 mark of disc 1 (during "Steve Vai guitar solo").

I only have one request, that you don't take these files and post them on other torrent sites. I have many shows to upload. I will upload, let them get seeded by others and after a majority have downloaded the files completely, remove my files so I can seed something new. I prefer to manage my own shows on DIME and The Traders Den. I will upload to other sites when I wish to for select shows. Thanks for honoring my wishes in advance.

This is “CBG Classic Master Video Series Vol. 49”.

I pledge allegiance to the United States of get down! Another band on the road in 1988 was David Lee Roth’s band in support of the Skyscraper album. Like Van Halen, this was one of the artists that I wanted to capture as many times as I could because I was such a big Van Halen fan. It was just 4 years since the 1984 tour, and that seemed like a decade to where David and Ed were now. But I liked them both and I wasn’t going to change anything, so I might as well enjoy both in what they were doing then. At this point I had already done some of the Van Halen Monsters of Rock shows, so I accomplished filming VH and was super happy I got them recorded multiple times. Also, David had already been through the northeast once in March and April and I was able to get a few audios and videos of his shows back then, so it was a great success so far, even though I always wished I filmed the other ones I only audio taped. Isn't that human nature?

Now, in the crazy heat of the summer of 88, David was on a second swing through the area and I had just gone down to Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night to film his show. MSG always brought out the big show and extra energy in Dave. I was able to film it but when I got out of the Garden, I checked the tape and the sound was all messed up, with constant dropouts. UGH! I thought that video was a wasted effort until a few years later when a friend who I would meet for the first time and become life long friends with (Lance) told me he audio taped the show. Awesome! But then I tried to synch it to my video and just couldn’t do it. The audio was analog cassette and the video was analog 8mm tape. By the end of the first song, the disparity in time was like 5-7 seconds off. So it just sat until recently where Guitard was able to synch the sources on a computer with multiple fine adjustments and that is released now.

Well, I thought it was a loose connection with the external mic being plugged into the camcorder mic input jack. Just in case, I brought my Sony WM-D6C audio deck into New Haven with me just to have a backup audio and really just to have a good sounding audio to listen to in my car. In the MSG show on Wednesday night, I went like center ice (50 yard line) and in the 200’s and found a cubby hole where they put the camera for hockey and basketball games, but there was no camera there and I just stood in that cove and filmed. It was rather close for MSG since there are Loge seats and 100’s, 200’s (where I was), 300’s, and even 400’s on a ring around the top of the arena. So after getting that close show in MSG, and already having videos from Nassau Coliseum and the Worcester Centrum under my belt, I decided to get ballsy and go close for the first time in New Haven Coliseum and film on the 1st level there. It would mean standing in the crowd in the section and filming with the camcorder up to my face. I was comfortable with filming to my face as I did that in the other shows I already did. In fact, mostly I am filming with the camcorder up to my face standing and holding it like that for the whole show. With a 2x magnification lens on the camera to give me twice the xoom capability. Where every movement is magnified 2 times when zoomed in all the way. And there was no optical stabilization on camcorders back then, it wasn't an option yet. As it turned out, I was able to stand quite easily and film that way with the camcorder up to my face. Back then, I didn’t even cover the camera or anything, how stupid! So I didn’t risk anything trying to film Poison warming up Roth. But when the show started, I felt in my natural element standing there and filming. I was even closer than MSG. About 12 rows off the floor and two sections out from the stage on the left side. It was divine satisfaction. By the end of the show, I was just hoping for it to be over so I would get it and not be caught and lose the whole tape I worked so hard to capture.

At this point, I was filming in the Springfield Civic Center in Massachusetts, a small arena that had like 7 rows off the floor and then a walkway and then about 15 rows for the second level, and I would go about 10-12 rows up in the second level. This was still lower in an arena than being in the first level of the Brendan Byrne Arena in NJ. But it was still the second level of the Springfield Civic Center. And I had just gotten done filming Pink Floyd and Van Halen in football stadiums in the northeast, so I was more accustomed to being away from the band while filming, although I filmed one of those Floyd shows 2nd row in the first level and one of the VH shows 8th row in the first level both on the side of the band (rather close for a football stadium). This is the reason I bought the 2x magnification lens, to convert the 6:1 zoom ration on the camcorder to a 12:2 zoom ratio. Just to get in twice as close as the camera allowed.

Well, this David Lee Roth show in New Haven was the first time I filmed on the first level of an arena, let alone, up by the band. I was the closest I have ever been in a big arena. I also left the 2x lens on the camera to get the close up zooms. The show had it particular differences compared to the MSG show but it was the same setlist. It was so fun filming and seeing the closeness in the viewfinder. I was so pumped to get out of the Coliseum with that video. When I played this one back, same issue with the sound again as MSG even though I tested the external mic with my stereo at home, it had all the dropouts in it. UGH! Thank god I recorded the WM-D6C also as a backup. So Guitard used that alternate audio and synched it to this video. Thank you! I was able to determine afterwards that there was a short in the external mic I was using and I threw the mic away and got a new one. This issue didn’t happen again. Enjoy David Lee Roth with ‘Stevie, Can you say NEW HAAAAVENNNNN?!’ CBG5150 Posted to JamToThis 2016-12-26.
