NOTES

Upon first listen of the "Reunion" compilation from Mean Street Studios, I immediately fell in love with the concept of coordinating a variety of diversely-sourced live material into a themed anthology with imperceptible song transitions. Van Halen has always been my favorite band and I wanted to pay homage by similarly assembling a series of collected live recordings I could share with fellow fans and listeners.

The theme of this particular compilation is Van Halen’s flagship 1978 world tour. The purpose is to honor and uniquely capture the very essence of the live Van Halen experience during their professional infancy. To provide the most expansive possible representation and historical perspective of this legendary time in the band’s history, I have included every song Van Halen performed live on the tour, sourced almost every one of them from a different date and venue, and sequentially positioned them in the same order they were played on location with as indiscernible song transitions as I could achieve.

My desired outcome is for the listener to feel as though they are a member of the audience witnessing the band's musicianship, personality, and nuance developed throughout the duration of their first world tour in one all-encompassing show. At conclusion of the last song, I want the listener to feel exhausted, fulfilled, inspired, and excited to take the trip all over again as if they just spent nine glorious months following the band around the world.

Happy touring and bottoms up!

*NOTE: This is the original first release of the compilation titled "World Tour 1978" that is part of a series of compilations branded as "reCOLLECTION xx" ("xx" referring to the number in the series). With respect to lineage, I have done my best to disclose my limited alterations by adding their descriptions directly after the sources' original lineage(s) (when available).
Most of the audio changes I made involved slightly adjusting amplification to avoid noticeable volume fluxuations and, of course, crossfading was used at the beginning and end of each track to achieve smooth transitions between songs from different sources. No equalization or other hokus pocus was used to alter the sources' sound.

Having the aforementioned being said, I invite all listeners to offer ideas for improvement. If you have a suggestion for improving the audio of any of the tracks or even have a different source for a song that you think is stronger than what is represented on this collection, I welcome any and all comments.

Yes; working on the 79 tour now. My goal is to do these for all the tours up to 98. Not looking forward to 1980 though because, as we know, there are very few available good sounding shows.

Thanks for saying so. The artwork is almost as important to me as the songs; and I'd like to think it's something that will set my compilations apart from others. For my anthologies, I want the artwork to imitate as precisely as possible the original tour merch for those tours. For the '78 tour, there was very little merch for a freshman band supporting other established acts but on the cover art as well as on the tour dates pages, and most won't notice this, the text "Van Halen", "World Tour", and "1978" are exact replicas in terms of font, kerning, and tracking of the designed text on the back of the most common/only shirt sold on the tour (front of the shirt being simply the logo lifted from the VH1 album).

The cover image (with VH1 Dave encircled by a rainbow) as well as the back cover (with the watercolor waves) are also replicas of the rare 1978 tour book front/back that was designed and sold for the Japan leg.

My goal is for the booklets to resemble the old-school tour books (remember those?) that used to be designed back in the day. The only discrepancy is that, say in 1979, the pics they used were from the '78 tour. For the 1980 tour, the pics used were from the '79 tour and so on. I don't want to copy those tour books but wish to use some of the elements from them and other merch from the tour (maybe even parking lot t-shirts) to design an appropriate feel and look that is consistent with the tour merch artwork of that particular year.

wow, very nice... I don't usually grab stuff like this, but VH is my all-time favorite band. From the looks of this, you put a lot of hard work and hours into this. For that reason... I'll Bite !

Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the other years ( good luck with the 80's )

Thank you! I vividly remember the original Reunion fan made release and was on the first "trading tree" for that release back in 2001.

I'll download reCOLLECTION 01 tonight!

Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the other years ( good luck with the 80's )
Thanks for the bite! (did that sound funny?)

It's definitely a labor of love; I thought this was kind of an original idea that many big VH fans like yourself would appreciate. I hope you find it a fun listen. There are MANY more to come with time.

Man, that is just so awesome that someone like yourself from the original "Reunion" tree is listening to this! I'm totally stoked. I was really hoping folks from that project might QA this and provide input for the subsequent tours. 78 was relatively nice to work with given all the available soundboards but 79 and especially 80 are going to be a real challenge. I think I may have to contract some audio equalization help on these. I most definitely appreciate you downloading this and giving it a listen.
