This show was professionally filmed at the Olympia theatre in Paris, France on December *19, 1970. This show is quite rare, and this is one of the best versions of it available. There have been a couple of other versions of this show in circulation that were sourced from 2nd or 3rd Generation VHS copies.
This new Snivlle Remastered Edition is sourced from a newly surfaced "BETA Max HQ" transfer. The tape had been recorded when the footage first aired on BBC1 television.
The concert itself was performed while Sabbath were on tour in Europe, supporting the "new" LP titled, "Paranoid".
This release recently underwent the process of being remastered with Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0. The incredible NeatVideo for Premiere Pro plug-in was also used to denoise and apply high resolution enhancement to the footage. NeatVideo goes far beyond the capabilities of most freely available denoising filters. It uses a series of computationally precise algorithms that enable it to apply 'intelligent sharpening' without inducing any unwanted halo-like effects. The final product does not result in softened imagery.
The audio was remastered with Adobe Audition 1.5 and a number of Pro-grade, DirectX audio plug-ins. This disc contains a carefully remastered PCM audio mix offering dynamic volume and fidelity. The clarity of the original sound track is greatly improved with an extended frequency response. It retains only a hint of the original tape hiss. The original audio portion of the second broadcast was not as clear as the first. This anomaly has been lessened by a large degree and the remastered sound is now much more uniform across both broadcast segments.
The edited footage was then frame-served from Premiere Pro directly to CCE 2.67 SP and encoded at a very high bitrate of 7990 kbps with advanced vertical filtration and high quantization enabled. Unless you are lucky enough to find a digital transfer or a 1st Gen copy from off of the original broadcaster's reel, I believe that you will find that this version is one of the best.
Paris ‘70 is one of the more famous Sabbath films, since is one of the only pro-shot films of the band during the early 70’s and an excellent one too! Originally filmed on 16mm for the Belgian TV program “Pop Shop”, it was later re-broadcast on British TV by Yorkshire and Tyne Tees Television, where it aired as two, 30 minute episodes.
It goes without saying that this is one of the most essential Black Sabbath videos to have in your collection. The performance is top notch and it is the earliest known pro-shot film of the band playing a full concert.
Ozzy does sing some different lyrics for many songs and improvises some new ones during “Hand Of Doom” and “War Pigs”. During “War Pigs”, he even resorts to the original lyrics for “Walpurgis” during one verse. Although it wasn’t uncommon for Ozzy to forget lyrics, I do think it's more likely that the songs were still somewhat new to the band, at this show.
SETLIST:
Paranoid
Hand Of Doom
Rat Salad
Iron Man
Black Sabbath
N.I.B.
Behind The Wall Of Sleep
War Pigs
Fairies Wear Boots
Conclusion:
The extensive digital processing that this show has undergone took it from being a dark, grainy cludge into a pleasantly watchable piece of vintage concert footage. The PC that was used to complete this project is only a 3.06 Ghz. P4 w/ HT and 1 GB of Rambus memory. The video processing, in particular, was very CPU intensive and took a considerable length of time; about 72 hours in total. It is my sincere wish that my all of my fellow traders will enjoy this newly "Remastered Edition". Big thanx to messer19 for making the source available.
* Some believe the date is December 20, 1970.

rotflmao! . .DOH! . .Son-of-a". . . .rattin' smattin'. ..Grrr. ..silly man, I am! . . :o
Yes, I noticed the menu too . ..after uploading, of course. Other than "Iron Maiden" instead of "Iron Man" typo, everything else looks pretty good, even if I do say so meself.
I will test my theory out sometime over the next 2 or 3 hours. I will replace the VOB file which contains the Menus. If the menu continues to work well after burning, I will upload the correct MENU VOB. Jeepers, sorry for the mix-up. In the meantime, feel free to take a look at what you have of it thus far and report your findings.
*** EDIT BY SNIVLLE ***
The Menu has been corrected. . . . LOL . . . you can now choose either the "Iron Maiden" menu or the proper one. . . heh.

Thanx a million for the vote of confidence, scocs . It is encouraging to know that I've upped a decent upgrade. It makes me happy to know that the results are worth the time and effort. It gives me the gumption to keep plugging away at these kinds of projects.
I'm probably biting off more than I can chew, but I've a whopper of a project planned for myself. I'd like to create a decent COLORIZED version of the Rush '76 in Jersey footage. I have 2 copies of who, but one is less degraded than the other. Both copies have the broadcaster's code and time stamps. It may take me weeks to get the hang of doing it, but I would love to try. If it were to turn out ok, I would then tackle colorizing the classic KISS '75 show, "Winterland Hell".
If there are others who "seriously" putz around with sort of thing and care to compare notes, feel free to PM me.

DVD player software such as PowerDVD, WinDVD, etc. have no trouble with bitrates. Only older DVD players sometimes have problems with DVDs which have video bitrate values higher than 8000 kbps. DVD players manufactured over the past 4 years don't typically have that trouble.

It is standard PAL DVD with interlaced frames.
Try burning the DVD again without the "corrected menus" to see if that helps. Obviously the screen shots were taken on a PC and are not "Shaking". I empathize with the folks who are having trouble with their downloaded files, but the disc plays perfectly for me. I've made 5 copies and have given them away to in-laws and friends; the discs work well for all of them. :dunno:
I would also like to invite the people whom have downloaded this release and have played it without any problems to post comments as well. I don't claim to know everything, but I've been working with audio & video production and post-production since many years. I don't author discs which do not adhere strictly with DVD compliance standards. That's why I encode the video portion at only 7990 kbps; just to make sure that the MPEG-2 stream is under the 8000 kbps threshold.
I burn all DVDs with either CloneDVD 2 or with NERO. In total, I've burned 7 copies of this show. All of them work well. The only other thing that could be wrong, is that the files you've downloaded are corrupt. I have had that experience and had to download the titles in question twice. I haven't had the problem since upgrading to Azureus 2.5.0.0.
These files were shared to JTT from a rock-stable Linux server. Have you double checked the files with the included md5 file? Maybe try burning the DVD files with a different application. I would not knowingly share an inferior release with my NAME on it. Read the original post, please. It explains in detail exactly how the DVD files were created and compiled. Run a G-Spot scan on the files to verify the information if you like . . . .
Before sharing a DVD that I've authored myself, I run a few tests. We have 3 Windows PCs, a MAC (OS X 10.4.7 Tiger), 2 Linux PCs and 3 DVD SA Players (inluding a DVD Recorder). Both of my burned copies of this show work flawlessly on all of the above. I use Xine under Linux, WinDVD under Windows, and Apple's DVD Player software on MAC.
Have we some experts in the group who can offer up a tangible suggestion as to why this is happening to some folks? I honestly can't determine the reason.

DVD Decrypter Results:
I have successfully extracted all of the files from my own 2 personal copies without any errors. However, it has been reported to me via PM that others may be receiving "Packed Header" errors. If this is the case, then the files must have gotten corrupted.
Would this happen because I was sharing the files using Azureus 2.5.0.0? The torrent was created using MakeTorrent exactly as described in the FAQ on this site.
JTT Upload Guide (http://www.jamtothis.com/showthread.php?t=3081)
It is very important to me that you all enjoy this release as intended. Knowledgeable, helpful advice will be greatly appreciated.
i didn't try with the corrected menu and not burned it yet, but:

-plays fine with VLC 0.8.4a, DVD shrink and neroshow time, shaky with power DVD

People really need to stop repeatedly seeding this show. It's been officially released on the DVD "Black Sabbath In Concert".

It's listed as 1972 but this is incorrect. It is the 1970 Paris show.

The one in question is not officially sanctioned at all and also it's in crap quality, I've had much better versions than that from trading. So people need to continue seeding this one as opposed to order the one refferred to as I did, a complete waste of money...

I've just analyzed the Sabbath concert and found the same problems previously stated by Retarderman.
So, what I did was I demuxed the 1st chapter as a test. Then made 2 copies of that with different names.
Then I imported these 3 same M2V files with accompanying PCM audio files as 3 different timelines in Adobe Encore 1.51. I made a simple menu with 3 buttons for the 3 files/timelines, namely 'Original', 'Upper' and 'Lower'.
Then what I did was I let the one named original be as it was (originally transcoded) and then I chose VBR re-transcoding set with upper fields for the second file and lower fields for the third, then built a DVD structure and burned it to a RW disc. And the problem was that the mpeg2 file you transcoded originally had the wrong field order setting because when I played the test disc the original untouched file and the one I reencoded with upper filelds first both had the flickering problem as opposed to the one reencoded with lower filelds first which looked great.
You wrote that you edited the content in Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0, then you must know that Premiere's standard field order setting is lower fields first. You must have had the wrong setting either in CCE's plugin settings or in Premiere's export settings, either one of them must have had 'Upper fields first' chosen, hence the flickering problems in the transcoding mpeg that was produced.
I know all about this since I have worked with Premiere and CCE programs and encoders since 2002. So, if you still have the project on your hard drive including the untranscoded AVI files, you would need to make a new version with correct trancoding setting inclding 'Lower fields first'.
Also, all this talk about the DVD playing alright on VLC and other PC programs is nothing to take notice of in this case, as VLC plays a file with corrupted field order settings without any problems. But as I assume most people would like to watching and listening to their beloved concerts in their living room using a stand alone DVD player hooked to a TV and a stereo sound system and not on a PC, or am I wrong??
Thats my 2 cents on this, feel free to ask if there is anything you might wonder...
snivlle
12.15.06, 02:03 AM
I have reversed the field order of the elemental streams. I apologize to everyone whom has had trouble viewing this show. I had CCE set to encode as "LOWER FIELD FIRST", yet the resulting files were indeed encoded as "UPPER FIELD FIRST". There shouldn't be any more problems viewing the DVD now.
I will have to recompile the DVD and upload the new files. The trouble is, I can't afford the bandwidth right now. I'm not kidding; my ISP has "laid the law down" and have read the riot act to me. If I go over the allotted bandwidth again, they will charge me for a top tier business account. ($200 /month). It will have to wait until next month.
I apologize profusely for the screw up, gang. I still don't understand why the discs play perfectly fine for me. I've burned and have given away 5 copies of the DVD and no one else has had trouble viewing it . . . .go figure.
Much appreciation goes out to comaman for helping me to sort it all out. As it turns out, some DVD players will play this DVD perfectly, while others throw fits. The situation is worse when playing back in "progressive scan" mode.
Fellow Canadians, feel free to contact me for B&P.

1st time i burned it with roxio disc copier, and i got the heavy parkinson thing
2nd time i used roxio again but burned it as a data disk and it plays fine on my dvd player

Doesn't sound to me like he was taking credit for your work, just talked about what he did to the copy he had. I'm sure everyone would love to have the better version, but this is the best of what was out there.

Re-read the original torrent info. Does it sound as though I was taking anyone's "claim"? I thanked the original seeder (whom was also the taper, I thought) in the torrent info. Even if I were stealing your thunder, it wasn't intentional.
If your version outdoes my work, upload it or provide a link, instead of coming after me with "the gloves on". Your approach is not one of community sharing - it was an offensive move. My intentions were to provide my fellow traders with a concerted, professional remastering effort for the sole purpose of providing the best "known" version possible. I thought my torrent comments were concise and polite. I didn't eloquently state that it "blew" anyone else's efforts out of the water.
I would also suggest that you post your apology publicly as well. Don't come slamming me, because I will slam back harder.
If every person who ever shared a piece of footage within the trading community held such possessive views, none of us would have anything. You don't own the copyright to the footage. I'm pretty sure that the hundreds of fans, whom have downloaded the version that I diligently worked on, would love to see a pristine copy. I also said in my original torrent comments that unless there is a direct digital transfer from a braodcaster's reel, etc, that this is "one of the best" . . . However, until they see better, the "Snivlle Remastered Edition" remains one of the best in circulation.
The Snivlle version stands. It's well authored and looks & sounds much better than the Beta Max transfer did in it's original state. If you have better, please share with us, and I'm sure that the Snivlle Remastered Edition will graciously be put aside.

Sorry
I was pissed off that someone had remastered the raw beta transfer, especially after I went to the effort to get it properly remastered. I had put out a pre-remaster (the one you remastered) to wet people's appetite.I have just found out that you did this, there is already a higher quality remaster in general trading circulations (mine). My remaster was done from the original betamax tape (mine). Lads you should be thankful I kept the original betmax tape, it was lost at home for 15 years. I recorded it 2 friday nights in a row on Yorkshire TV in the early 80's. If I had been two years older, I would have been down the pub on a friday night , never mind taping black sabbath, lol

Apology accepted. I had no idea that a pristine, hardware-based remastering was in the works. Most folks transfer something to digital and leave it at that; they don't continue on to restore as much quality as possible. I made the supposition that the original beta max footage was all there was. I undertook the project as a "labor of love", as it were. I honestly meant no offense, sir.
It's an understatement that folks are appreciative that the tape was found, and shared, after 15 years. Folks also appreciated what I made every attempt to do as well. Let's chalk it up as the "Snivlle Remastered" version was a very nice version too. It may not be as nice as what you now have, but it is a lot better than anything preceding it, that we know of. Really, there are dozens of shows, in various degrees of quality, in wide circulation. This is just another of those situations. Yours can be the ten, I'm cool with mine being a solid 9. :)
Thank-you for your nice comments in the PMs you'd sent to me.
BTW, the seeder's comments (messer19) at demonoid did not infer any kind of 'appetite wetting'. I would have been on the lookout for a better rendering, had I known that one existed.
Good deal guys, glad that's cleared up.

Very nice! Yes, better results than my PC-based remastering could achieve. Anyone want to co-sign a few thousand $$ loan for me? I need some new out-board gear . . . :p

Probably not, see the reason in post 1 for why this one was pulled...

This is available by the old fashioned trading process and it has been for some time. Im not a big fan of torrents myself, mainly because I have no idea how to use it.
Can anybody Re-Seed The 3rd Attempt of this awesome Remaster Work?

I'm working on a top notch NTSC conversion of this piece. It's being done using AVIsynth 2.5.7 -> CCE 2.67 SP with a couple of high quality AVIsynth filters to maintain maximum picture quality. Preliminary test results indicate that the NTSC version will be about as good as the original PAL Snivlle version. I would still give up a month's coffee to get a hold of Exiled Yorkie's uber version though. :)
