Question for the experts.

I dl a U2 divx on sharezara. I can watch it fine on my computer from the file.

I then encoded it to dvd with nero, with it playing in the background without a hitch. When I tried to play it on my stand alone dvd player it won't play and says "playback prohibited by an area limitation"

Is this a region code problem? Any way around this with nero? or some other software
The DVD also plays fine when played back on my computer as well.

Thanks in advance for any and all help :thumb:

My guess would be that you have a console DVD player that is not compatible with DVD-/+R discs. I have two players... A newer panasonic, and a toshiba that I paid like $600 for when DVD players first hit the market. The toshiba is my favorite...I just love their products... there's no copy protection built in, and I've never had a problem with it at all... but it can't read a burnt DVD or VCD, no matter what I do. The same discs will play in the panasonic with no problems.

Perhaps someone else could offer you some advice or things to try, but my guess is that you have a slightly older DVD player, and it's not compatible with burnt discs.

You are correct sir. It is an older console sony, but I have been able to play burned cd's with it. I burned the Sao Paul VH show, and some other shows from various sources that have worked just fine on DVD+ discs. So thats why this is so curious to me. Maybe its divx conversion problem or a region code problem. Its all I can think of. :dunno:

As always, I appreciate your input :thumb:

"playback prohibited by an area limitation"

Sounds to me like a region problem. If you have already burned it on to a DVD, try re-ripping it with DVD Decrypter from the DVD. It will re-rip the whole DVD and let you set your own region code and other protection the DVD has. There are other way, but this will be easyest for you.

Region codes are:
1: U.S., Canada, U.S. Territories
2: Japan, Europe, South Africa, and Middle East (including Egypt)
3: Southeast Asia and East Asia (including Hong Kong)
4: Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
5: Eastern Europe (Former Soviet Union), Indian subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
6: China

Settings are in the "Gereral" tab inder REC protection Region. Set it to whats needed.

You then will have NEW files you can burn to make another NEW DVD. Just burn the VIDEO_TS folder with the new files in it and a empty AUDIO_TS, doing a "data" burn with Nero. Thats it.. should be fine after that.

If not, Don't use nero. PM me again and we'll use what i use :thumb:

HK,

Much Thanks for that response. :thumb:

I did a google search on the error message I'm getting..."playback prohibited by area limitations" and people are saying that is a known error when playing PAL discs on NTSC only(sony) players. I realized that the show is mostly PAL format according to nero, so I tried to burn it in NTSC format the second time, and it started to burn and then kicked the disc out after a few minutes.

I think I'm basically screwed. What do you think. :dunno:

yup, PAL / NTSC is region.. as we talked about.Look for a firmware update for your SetTop DVD player. Undates can/will make your DVD SetTop "region free"
I updated mine almost 2 years ago, its been 100% better since.
Just make sure you get the right firmware for your player, of you will fuck it up. Also fallow the instructions 100% when doing it.
