OK, I say that the band's best Roth-era setlists were played in South America. These are the songs that differed from night to night. Which setlist was the best?

It's "Dancing In The Street" ;)

BTW it's entirely possible that 1/16/83 and 1/21/83 were the same, but since we don't have a complete 1/16/83 we'll never know. Also, same goes for 2/5/83 and 2/11/83, but since we don't have a complete 2/11/83 we'll never know.

I'm going to go with Sao Paulo, only because VH played Summertime Blues a number of times going back to 1978 if not earlier, whereas these are the only recordings of "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers" post-club days.

Lou,

DITS Correction made.

:chucks:

Now, I agree that BD & HR is an incredible song (I love how Mike and Dave sing it in tandem) but to me, Summertime Blues is so damn heavy and uplifting that I can't not include it. The band basically took the Who's Live at Leeds version and added a touch of Blue Cheer in there. The end jam on that song just kills me every time I hear it. Therefore I am going with 2/5/83, which also has the definitive version of Heartbreak Hotel.

I am going in a different direction on this one. While the DD and SA83 shows had the best overall variety, for me the best setlists are from the Fair Warning tour. The shows were just RAW.

On Fire, SSwing, HAIL, MeanS, Unchained, Romeo, plus the Hits. Also bringing back FYLT puts these shows over the top for me.

I play the 5% speed corrected LA 81 show all the time now. Also have the Providence 81 show in heavy rotation.

As a Northern California guy, the ultimate would be Oakland 6/13 full show, probably will never happen, if it even is out there.

Jeff,

I go through phases where I listen to different tours. Back in the 80s when I started tape trading, I lived for the 78 tour. In the last few years, I was a huge fan of the FW tour. I agree that the Providence show is a great one to listen to, yet I do think the band sounds stiff. In contrast, throw in the Cleveland 81 show. The band sounds so "tight but loose," to steal a phrase from the Zep folks, that to me it is jaw dropping. Every song is powerful and energetic. And I would be remiss if I did not mention that I love how that tape captures the hugeness of the old Richfield Col. It is an incredible tape. Coming in right behind them are the Greensboro 81 and the Philly 7/21/ show. By July, the band had kicked into high gear and had hit their peak for that tour.

Now I have to say that the DD tour is my favorite. Yet I have never really gotten into the 80 tour in the same way. Maybe that one will be next.

I will have to pick up Cleveland 81 soon, haven't heard that one yet.

As for your least favorite tour (1980 Invasion) to listen to, I would have to agree. Out of the 6 tours + club I listen to the 1980 shows the least. I am not sure what it is, they dropped a few of my favorites and added a few that were just ok me. Also the show seemed shorter in lenght. Mostly I listen to London & Largo, sometimes Oakland. Any recommendation on a 1980 show that I should look for. The early shows seem to have a slightly different set.
